Week 7 – 20 October 2023
At York High School we have always valued our close working relationships with parents in our school community.
Please could you take 10 minutes to complete our Parent Survey as we always value your feedback. Please could you return this by Friday 27th October at midday.
It was great to see Y8 pupils learning valuable lifesaving skills this week through the Restart a Heart workshops with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
A big thank you to Christina Gabbitas and North Yorkshire Police who visited this week to share important messages of safety with Year 7 pupils. Christina signed 200 copies of her graphic novel ‘Trapped in County Lines’ as a gift to pupils.
The YHS Way
Next week’s YHS Way focus is on “responding promptly and respectfully to staff instructions”
Restart a Heart
On Monday, Year 8 celebrated the 10th anniversary of Restart a Heart, with a drop-down day focused on health and wellbeing. Students learnt the basics of CPR and First Aid, as well as having visitors from Hull York Medical School to look at diagnosis. We also had sessions covering teamwork skills, the role of vaccines in public health, and how we can speak positively about ourselves. Every student has received a certificate to recognise their hard work in learning CPR.
Students were a credit to themselves and YHS, with visitors commenting on their excellent engagement and interest in the content. I spent lots of the day circulating and saw incredibly strong communicators within each group!
A massive well done to our Y10 Sports Leaders who co-ordinated a thrilling session and showed themselves to be incredibly positive role models.

Year 11 RAS
Y11 RAS, students have been learning about budgeting and personal finance. This week, they have really enjoyed playing the ‘Game of Life’, making adjustments to a monthly budget based on unexpected circumstances. Students responded really well to the principles of budgeting – well done!

Year 7’s Buzzing About Books
This week students in Year 7 received a surprise gift, in the form of a new book.
Working with the BookTrust’s BookBuzz Scheme, Miss Linsey has been busy sourcing some fantastic titles.
We are delighted to have been able to give the gift of a book to our students, and hope that this is either a great addition to their home bookshelf, or the start of a brand new book collection.
Happy Reading!
Well done to pupils with their work excellent in maths
In 2 weeks, year 7 to 10 pupils have completed over 65 000 questions correctly using SparxMaths for their online homework and completed over 540 hours of independent learning. 20 pupils have already improved their times tables.
What a fantastic effort!
Remember homework is set every Wednesday for the following Wednesday for year 7 to 10.
Massive congratulations to the Year 11 football team! What a win!
This evening saw Year 11 WIN away at Joseph Rowntree School with a very impressive 6-0 scoreline! I am so thrilled and proud of our students for both their performance and attitude with only 11 players. There are far too many highlights to pick out however special mentions must go to goal scorers Tyler x 2, Harley x 2, Miles and Kane. We certainly have represented ourselves well this evening. Congratulations to all!
We have one final league game left to play in December so hopefully Year 11 can finish off their school footballing careers with another win.
