Year 11 Practice Exams

Good luck to all of our Year 11 pupils in the practice exams that begin next week. It’s your time to shine!

The first exam is English language on Monday morning starting at 8.40am.

There are lots of resources on Google classroom as well as the YHS 3-2-5 Instagram account to help pupils with their final preparations over the weekend – @revise_3_2_5 will have key areas to revise the evening before each practice exam; key facts, key questions and some videos.

@revise_3_2_5 is now reaching well over 100 accounts in Year 11!

Year 10 Parent’s Evening

Parents evening is on the Wednesday 22nd November.

Thank you to everyone who has made appointments so far.

There is still time to book, please contact Mrs Walker in the pastoral office if you need any help with this.

Attendance

Thank you for your support in ensuring our pupils have good attendance.

It really helps us to know if a pupil is going to be absent so that we can prioritise contact with vulnerable pupils.

If your child is going to be absent from school, please contact using one of the following methods, with your child’s name and reason for absence, before 8:30am – :

  • Call the main school number 01904 806600 and select option 1
  • Call Miss Harrison our Attendance Officer on 01904 806599
  • Text 07860 040378
  • Email reception@yorkhigh.southbank.academy

Staff continue to enjoy our weekly calls designed to support with any attendance issues and especially the positive calls on a Friday to celebrate five full days of attendance!

Just a reminder that the Every Day Counts draw for an Amazon gift voucher (per house group) will be made on the last day of term; the names of pupils with a full week of attendance go into the draw each week.

The Place

This week Jen Addicott visited YHS to tell pupils more about The Place based in Sanderson Community House.

Jen shared information about the activities available to children and young people who live locally which are all free to take part in!

Pupils can visit The Place on a Wednesday afternoon between 3.30-4.30pm to meet the staff, play games and take part in craft activities.

The Gateway After School Hangout is on Thursdays from 3.30-5pm.

Jen will be back in school on 21st November to speak to pupils in Years 7-10 to find out more about what they would like to see at The Place.

For more information please visit https://theplace.york.ac.uk/whats-on

Educational Psychology Support Line

York’s Educational Psychology Service are offering telephone appointments for children and young people as part of their universal offer.

This is a one-off consultation for 30 minutes which takes place on a Wednesday morning during term time.

The EP Supportline is available to discuss wellbeing and learning needs of children and young people which are causing concern to or within the family.

It is an opportunity to share strategies that might be helpful as part of their early intervention offer.

Please email EPsupportline@york.gov.uk to request a call back about this service.

Year 8 Netball

On Monday night the Y8 netball team played Bootham in a friendly game. Miss Jeans and the pupils were feeling extremely positive following our win against Vale of York last week.

Miss Jeans said, “We were a couple short of our squad so the girls did extremely well battling fatigue playing with no substitutes. When we arrived at Bootham we found that they had around 20 players to subside our 7.”

Going into the first quarter the girls played with great skill and precision ending with a 4-2 win to us. Some of the passes and teamwork from every player was outstanding! They demonstrated the hard work they have been putting into practice! Playing fresh opponents each quarter was extremely helpful to our students to learn new tricks and get a large variety. In the final quarter to say the girls were tired was an understatement. After a little pep talk they came back with high levels of resilience and determination to score another 3 goals. Bootham decided to swap players every quarter so we ended the overall game 9-21 to Bootham. However, I marked them as 3 separate games due to this change meaning we ended with the following:

  • 1st quarter 4-2 (YHS win)
  • 2nd quarter 0-8 (Bootham win)
  • 3rd quarter 2-10 (Bootham win)
  • 4th quarter 3-6 (Bootham win)

Well done girls! Good preparation to play Bootham all over again in a couple of weeks!”
