Name: Connor Spark
Profession: Ambulance Support Worker
Attended York High School: 2016-2021
Post-16 attended: York College
University or college? NA
Favourite subject at school: Biology, Geography
What I thought I wanted to do: Work as a Police Officer
What I ended up doing: Working in the Ambulance Service
How I got here: I originally tried doing A-Levels, but didn’t enjoy them. So I applied to join British Transport Police as a PCSO, and was successful. Whilst waiting for a start date with BTP, I was looking at alternative job opportunities within the ambulance service, and applied to be an EMD (999 call handler). I am now starting a Level 3 ASW Apprenticeship with Yorkshire Ambulance Service, responding to 999 calls.
Most useful skill or character trait for my job: Communication, you have two ears and one mouth. Knowing what to say and how to say it, is important, but particularly when you’re working in healthcare, listening is significantly more crucial.
Top tip! Don’t worry if your plan goes off course, you might end up better than where you wanted to be originally.
