York High School has been full of activity this week. We hosted our Year 7 Meet the Tutor sessions at the beginning of the week which provided a fantastic opportunity to further develop our home school relationships for our Year 7 pastoral team. Mr Hunt described the evening as fantastic with lots of positive feedback from our Year 7 parents regarding their child’s start to life at York High.
We also had a wonderful Curriculum Enhancement Day for our Year 8 students on Wednesday who learnt important and potentially life-saving CPR and first aid skills through our ‘Restart a Heart’ Day.
This week we have had an intercom system installed onto our new main school gate, which has improved our site security and therefore, the safety of all of our students. This will simply require visitors to press the intercom and speak with reception before entering the school site.
Have a great weekend everyone!

On Saturday 12 October two of our Year 7 students, Reuben and Grayson took part in the RCB Race for the Kids, to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital, to help fund the building of a new Children’s Cancer Centre at GOSH.
The race was started by a young cancer patient, Joshua, who was a real inspiration for the runners. The boys told staff at school that they had a great time, and the run was really lovely, with lots of people cheering them on and bands playing while they ran the 5k course.
Their fantastic work was praised this week when they were nominated for an Excellence Everyday Award, and got to chat to Mr Kumar about their fundraising.
Reuben and Grayson have raised over £600 (including gift aid) between them so far, but we would really like to help them raise even more, so if you would like to help them, please visit their fundraising pages – the links are below.
If you would like to find out more about the RBC Run for the Kids you can visit their website.
Thank you to the Armana House residents for their generous donation to our Community Cupboard.
On Friday 11 October we took 26 pupils from Years 7 and 8 to a very sunny York Racecourse for a day with Racing to School.
We had a day filled with educational activities and were given unique ‘behind the scenes’ access including the jockey’s weighing room, parade ring and even on to the racecourse itself.
Racing to School staff said that each of the 26 students were a credit to YHS and we all had a wonderful day.
In Maths this week we launched a new group for our Able, Gifted and Talented Mathematicians in Year 7. The group, which is run by Mr Byrne on Monday after school, saw pupils working together, talking about different ways to solve problems and explaining their methods.
One of the tasks the pupils tackled was to split the following shape up into three equal parts.
What more could you want than a hot chocolate, coffee or tea and biscuits while completing Maths GCSE questions? Well, this happens every Friday after school at the Year 11 Maths Paper Society!
There was a great turn out last week and 5-star ratings for the hot chocolate!
Last Wednesday, the Year 8 boys football team had their first fixture of the year as we welcomed the All Saints team to York High.
The visiting team took an early lead, showing some good skills going down the left hand side of the York High defence. We had chances whilst we were 1-0 down through Logan, who made the keeper pull off a superb save to stop him scoring from 20 metres out.
York High fought their way back into the game by playing short and quick passes and using the wingers who were getting loads of crosses into the box. Eventually one of those crosses found Junior who had the composure to shoot first time into the bottom corner to make it 1-1!
A special mention goes to the midfield trio of Elliot, Logan and Harley who were relentless in trying to win the ball back and never stopped running.
Well done boys!
We saw a great effort from our U16 rugby team as they took part in a tournament earlier this week. The standard of performance from all teams was exceptional!
We lost one, won one and drew one, finishing the tournament in second place. Jack takes player of the tournament for numerous outstanding weaves up the pitch, scoring many tries.
Thank you to the York Knights for another amazing event.
This season’s YHS Fantasy Football League keeps going from strength to strength with 73 teams now taking part each week. This is made up of 13 current and past staff and 60 pupils from all different year groups.
The current leader is Mr Pattinson with 463 points, just ahead of Jacob C, on 461, in third Mr Davies on 459 and Mr Winston in fourth with 458.
Mr Davies had a high scoring week with the team pictured.
Please contact Mr Oliver or Mr Byrne if any pupil wishes to join the league.
Good luck everyone this weekend after the international break and hopefully a high scoring weekend for everyone!
