Principal’s Weekly Post – Week 14

Without doubt, the highlight of this week was our wonderful festive showcase which provided a perfect platform for our students to dazzle us with their remarkable talents. The showcase included a range of fantastic performances and featured a sneak preview of our Grease musical which is being performed later in the academic year. A huge thank you to Mrs Lancaster and Miss Linsey for organising this fabulous event. 

On Wednesday we enjoyed our Christmas lunch which added further to the growing excitement as we approach the final week before the Christmas holidays.

A reminder that on Friday 20 December, the last day of term, students are welcome to wear their favourite Christmas jumper. This is optional and must be worn with our school uniform (replacing the school jumper).

Child Development

Year 10 Child Development students had a visit from Mr Hagyard, Community Engagement Volunteer for Yorkshire Ambulance Trust this week.

He delivered an engaging and informative session on Paediatric First Aid. We learned how to deal with babies and toddlers who have stopped breathing or are choking. We practised CPR to the tune of Nellie the Elephant, on a baby and a toddler and had a go at abdominal thrusts on a choking baby. Tillie also showed us the abdominal thrusts demonstrator jacket, which gave us all a laugh when it fired nerf style bullets across the room, to show the result of the procedure in removing stuck objects from the oesophagus.

Mr Hagyard linked all the first aid back to the anatomy and development of children, to help with our understanding of our safety and PIES aspects of our course. I found it particularly interesting, that as well as grapes, Wotsit style snacks are one of the biggest causes of choking in babies and young children, as once they mix with saliva, they form a solid claggy mass, which can block the infant’s wind pipe.

We are looking forward to our second session after the holiday. Thank you Mr Hagyard.

Excellence Every Day

Lots more rewards once again this week! Well done to Jak, Jan, Joan, Robyn, Ethan, Elsie, Skyler, Lewis, Harry, Ashlee, Alfred, Lucas, Toby, Jacob, Milo and Louis!

Year 9 Drop Down Day

Year 9 will be off timetable for an exciting Drop Down Day on Thursday 19 December. As part of the day, they will be designing their own business in the morning. This will be done in friendship groups of up to six students – they have had the opportunity to decide which group they would like to be in.

The afternoon will be spent watching YOLO! This is a performance by An Invisible Man which covers themes including: peer pressure, alcohol and substance misuse, toxic relationships, and mental health.

Prizes are on offer for the businesses designed in the morning; we’re really looking forward to seeing all of Year 9 in the building for such an exciting day.

Careers Spotlight – NHS Apprenticeships

Unlike the majority of apprenticeships, the NHS advertise their own. They have over 350 different roles, from clinical, patient facing roles like a pharmacist or a play worker, to non-clinical roles like finance and HR.
